THE
NORTH KENYA BANK
The North Kenya Bank (NKB) starts 36 miles from Malindi.
It is a steep Bank, which rises up from very deep water.
It is these steep banks that attract Bait Fish and in
turn bring in the predators.Due to the distance one must
cover to reach the Banks we do a 2-day / 1 night trip
out there. We leave Malindi harbour at l0 am and cruise
out at 15-20 knots. It normally takes 2 1/2 hours to reach
the closest point where the Bank starts to rise the
inside Ledge. From here we start trolling at normal
speed. All 3 of the Marlin family and Sailfish are found
here, and it is these fish that one targets during the
day. Any fish caught on the fist day are tagged/released
unless they are needed for bait. From August to November
the Banks hold shoals of big Yellow-fin Tuna ranging from
25 - 100kgs. At this time of year we do Day Trips out
to the NKB, as these fish are great sport. With the 2-day
trip we fish slowly out to the "outside drop off"
where the water is very deep and the night is spent hunting
the elusive Broadbill Swordfish. Billfish and Tuna have
been caught right out to the Broadbill spot, which is
55-60 miles from Malindi. At sundown the crew prepare
for night fishing. This either entails "drifting"
with squid deep down or trolling" very slowly
with lures and light sticks. The latter technique is proving
to be the most successful. It was first used in Kenya
three some years ago and is now spreading worldwide. The
next day is spent fishing back to Malindi. Most of the
time we fish until 2pm and then cruise back, getting in
at around 4.30pm. We have had some incredible results
from this area.

SOUTH
MLIMA
For those who find the North Kenya Banks trip too long,
yet still want to catch a Broadbill, there is the South
Mlima. The South Mlima is about 25 miles from Malindi
and therefore it doesn't take too long to get there and
the Broadbill fishing has been very good in this area.
Our biggest Broadbill was caught here
We offer two different options on this trip:
1) Leave Malindi at 2pm and fish out to the Mlima (mountain)
giving you a chance for other Billfish before it gets
dark. At sunset the crew will prepare for Broadbill fishing
which will either be spent drifting deep with squid or
trolling slowly with strip baits and lures. The next morning
fish back to Malindi arriving back by l0am.
2) Leave Malindi at 5pm and cruise straight out to the
Mlima, as soon as you arrive the crew will prepare for
Broadbill fishing as above. On first light cruise straight
back to Malindi, arriving back by 6.00am.

INSHORE
FISHING
Over the many years we have fished out of Malindi, it
came to our notice that some people prefer to stay closer
to shore and target smaller Game Fish on lighter tackle.
Therefore we commissioned a small boat just for this.
"Malachite" is a 25 foot center
console fiberglass craft with plenty of walk round room.
She is powered by twin 25hp engines and is very seaworthy.
We provide all necessary tackle, although we do encourage
anglers to bring their rods, reels and lures if they have
any.The majority of the time we fish along the reef and
target the smaller Game Fish such as Giant Trevally, Kingfish,
Barracuda, Five Finger Jack etc. "Malachite"
has an ideal platform to cast into shoals of Trevally
and Bonito feeding. We recommend that clients bring spinning
and/or fly gear along. The most productive area for this
kind of fishing is about 16 miles north of Malindi along
the Ngomeini headland. We regularly come home with 6 or
7 different species of fish. On calmer days she can also
venture out deeper targeting bigger fish.
"Malachite" is also an ideal boat to Fly Fish
from, due to the ample room all round.
"Malachite" is perfect for 2 anglers. She is
chartered by the hour, with a minimum period of 6 hours.
7 hours is a perfect day.

FISHING
SAFARIS
We
can organize several day fishing safaris to e.g. Shimoni,
Lamu etc. on request! Please use our contact form and
tell us your plans.
Here is an abstract of a recent report from a trip up
north:
"Neptune was fishing in the Kui area which is
very close to the Somali border. Fantastic fishing up
there, and first reports indicate that neptune had 26
sail, 2 or 3 wahoo over 30 kgs each - big fish - 1 yellowfin
of 35 kgs plus many smaller on the first day. All these
fish were released...In the 4 days that Neptune was fishing
up in the north they got 118 sail..."

DEEP
SEA JIGGING
For
the last years the method of Jigging in deep water has become
more and more popular. We have attuned to this and have
sucessfully tried different areas catching all kinds of
Snappers, Grouper, Trevally (incl. Gts) and even Amberjack
on jigs. If you decide to turn your daily trip into a Jigging
experience, you will be supplied with the corresponding
tackle. We fish mainly with 500gr Jigs in 500+ feet deep
water.

Grouper
(Rockcod) are only one of many options when jigging

TIGER
SHARK SPECIAL
Back in
the 2001/2002 season we discovered a small spot in the canyons
with an incredible amount of Tiger Sharks. We have developed
a special method of targeting the Tigers by slowly trolling
big bait on the downrigger in deep water. Various specimens
of 1000lbs+ have been released since then. The best day
in numbers so far offered 5 released Tigers on a single
trip with several additional strikes. Tell us if you want
to catch a Tiger and we will provide some extra bait.
